What Is Motivational Interviewing?

MI is an evidence-based conversation method that helps professionals guide people toward change — without pressure. Uses OARS: Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries. Originally from addiction counselling, now used in healthcare, social work, education, HR, and leadership worldwide.

Change rarely happens because you explain it. It happens when people find their own reasons – and feel genuinely heard. MI brings structure to demanding conversations.

When MI is the right step

Conversations need to have impact without becoming soft

Multiple interests, cultures, or expectations are at play

Motivation is hard to reach

Organisations reach out when:

Teams are exhausted from contact because resistance is growing

Leaders have to resolve the same issues over and over

Client or patient conversations lead nowhere

"Your staff is exhausted from having the same conversations over and over"

Same patients. Same issues. Same lack of follow-through. It's not about patience — it's about conversation skills that reduce repetition while increasing engagement.

MI gives structure to these conversations

"The more you push, the more your client resists"

You've tried reasoning. You've tried consequences. The harder you push, the harder they push back. Resistance isn't a wall — it's a signal.

MI teaches how to roll with resistance

"Your patient agrees to the treatment plan — and changes nothing"

They nod. They sign. They don't follow through. The problem isn't understanding — it's motivation. Your team is explaining, but not evoking.

MI teaches how to find the motivation inside

"Your team lead agrees to every change — and implements none"

In 1:1s, everything sounds great. In practice, nothing shifts. This pattern isn't laziness — it's ambivalence. And it responds to MI just as well as clinical settings.

MI works in management too

“Not endless discussions – but conversation skills that work in everyday life.”
